Emergency Department Technician/Paramedic - Inpatient

POSITION PURPOSE


Administers care to patients and performs various patient care activities and tasks in collaboration with and under the direction of emergency medicine providers and nurses. Collaborates with other staff members in the performance of duties. Complies with all established standards and practices.

Current BLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or the ability to obtain certification within 6 weeks of hire.

  1. Demonstrates competency with specific clinical skills and techniques that are listed in the department/unit skills list. Functions within the Wisconsin EMT-Paramedic regulations and hospital/nursing policy. Utilizes appropriate knowledge and documented competency in aseptic technique, universal precautions, and infection control.


  1. Monitors the task list and anticipates department patient care needs. Modifies patient care activities based on volume and acuity changes in the department. Determines the need for priority based on patient acuity. Effectively communicates decisions relating to patient care priority to the Resource Nurse.


  1. Assist in collecting detailed patient history and symptoms, including Vital


Signs, accurately and concisely documenting services provided within the


medical record in a thorough, timely manner. Documents observations and cares provided according to established guidelines.


  1. Demonstrates communication and leadership skills by collaborating with members of the health care team to achieve positive patient outcomes within established timeframes.


  1. Administers specific medications, starts IV's, and provides respiratory treatments in a timely manner, safely and in accordance with policy and procedure. Uses barcode scanning and medication libraries to ensure medication safety. Assists in providing basic bedside care, managing life support needs, and completion of treatments and procedures including intubations or any other critical care procedures (i.e., ICP, chest tube set up, etc.) under supervision of the physician or RN.


  1. Demonstrates competency in performing technical skills for injured patients including:
    patient immobilization, wound care and dressing application, care of burn patients, splint and casting procedures, crutch walking, application of various orthopedic devices. Assures that proper patient information is provided upon completion of the task. Instructs the patients and/or family on the use of the ordered orthopedic devices as directed by the RN.


  1. Demonstrates the ability to complete technical skills for cardiac patients in accordance with hospital/departmental procedures, including connecting patient to EKG monitors, programming of patient information in monitoring system, competently performing EKGs, and monitoring patients' rhythm and posting of strips in patient record.


  1. Participates in patient teaching. Documentation reflects patient understanding of cares provided and medications given.


  1. Collect laboratory samples and perform lab testing in accordance with


CLIA regulations and established policies and procedures.


  1. Maintains and organizes patient rooms and department work areas in a neat, clean and well-supplied manner; initiative is taken to assure environment is maintained to promote safety, rest and healing.


  1. Organizes and completes patient care activities and documentation for the assigned shift and in a professional manner. Documentation reflects special care activities provided, i.e., isolation precautions, PSO observations, room safety checklists, equipment used, etc.


  1. Promptly and courteously responds to any patient call light. Ensures patient has no other needs or questions prior to leaving the room.


  1. Recognizes the occurrence of life-threatening situations and emergencies and takes the appropriate actions in a timely manner. Able to assist with all types of special care patients:
    Code 4, Trauma, Stroke, STEMI, Pediatric, Suicidal, restrained, etc. Able to intubate under the direction of the provider.


  1. Actively participates in the implementation and monitoring of unit-based quality improvement activities. Addresses charting deficits when discovered by chart auditors and adapts practices to meet documentation requirements.


  1. Works with EMT students during their clinical rotations in the department as requested. Assists float staff and new hires in the department as needed.


  1. Accompanies patients in transport vehicles as directed to assure appropriate level of care and/or monitoring.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
